Fernandes became an associate member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) in 1991, and in 1996, he was promoted to fellow rank. He is currently a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales or ICAEW.

Fernandes worked for Warner Music South East Asia as Vice President of ASEAN and a Warner Music executive in Malaysia from December 1999 until July 2001. When it was revealed that Time Warner (later WarnerMedia; now Warner Bros. Discovery) would merge with America Online, Fernandes left to pursue his goal of starting a low-cost, no-frills airline.

Thanks to the late Datuk Pahamin A. Rajab, the former secretary-general of the Malaysian Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry, Fernandes had a meeting with Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad in October 2001.

Instead of starting from scratch, Mahathir advised Fernandes to buy an existing airline. At the time, the Malaysian government’s firm DRB-Hicom’s division AirAsia, which was heavily indebted, was losing money.

Fernandes acquired the business, which had two Boeing 737-300 jet aircraft and debts of US$11 million (RM40 million), by mortgaging his home and spending his own money for one ringgit (or around 26 US cents).

After he took control, AirAsia stabilized its finances and paid off all of its debts after a year. There was a 130% oversubscription for its initial public offering (IPO) in November 2004. According to Fernandes, time was a factor in AirAsia’s success. The price of leasing an airplane decreased by 40% following the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C.

In 2018, Fernandes announced the construction of additional terminals for low-cost carriers and acknowledged the need for new AirAsia aircraft. However, he said he had not yet decided on an aircraft manufacturer. Visit our page at Digi Hind News for more such fascinating details.
