A tragedy on the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway that claimed nine lives has put the whole state of Gujarat on high alert. Another upsetting incident has surfaced from Rajkot as officials begin cracking down on speeding and intoxicated driving.

On Sunday, a police sub-inspector (PSI) was driving intoxicated when he hit a young girl bicycling near the gate of Saurashtra University. The student was hurt in the collision, and her bicycle was severely damaged. Witnesses intervened and arrested the PSI after realizing he was driving recklessly.

A drunken police officer was caught on camera openly smoking a cigarette

PSI Lakshminarayan Vyas, the officer in question, was seen on camera smoking openly as the events in the viral video released by media on Twitter transpired. The injured student was taken to the hospital by witnesses, who then contacted authorities.

The situation became more dire when the student’s older brother made an official report at the campus police station charging PSI Vyas with drunk driving. When police personnel were caught breaking traffic laws, public outcry erupted and people began to doubt the legitimacy of traffic regulations.

Thanks to the quick thinking of the witnesses, the Rajkot Police responded quickly and took control of the intoxicated PSI. The alleged police officer is said to be stationed at the Bhuj precinct.
